How to wear a Mask Correctly

Wearing a face mask can help protect against viruses but its very important to know how to wear one correctly.

Before putting a mask on, start by washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use hand sanitiser.

Time to put on the mask

Make sure you have the mask the right way up. If possible, read the mask manufacturers advice on how to wear the mask properly as this can differ with different brands.

Many masks have a stiff bendable edge at the top that can be curved around your nose.

Now holding the mask by the straps, lift it to your face, and bring the straps around either to your ears or the back of your head, depending on the type of mask you have.

If your mask has a bendable top edge, pinch it to contour it around you nose. The mask should fit and cover the tip of your nose to just below your chin. There should be no gaps around the face.

While wearing the mask avoid touching your face or mask with your hands so that you do not contaminate anything. And do not lower the mask below your nose or mouth.

To properly remove the mask, once again properly wash or sanitise your hands. Then hold the straps of the mask and pull away from your face.

Do not touch the external surface of the mask, as it could be contaminated.

Disposable masks should be thrown away immediately and not reused.

Reusable masks should be put directly into the washing machine, away from your normal laundry basket. They should be washed at 60 degrees with detergent and disinfectant.

After you have taken off the mask, wash your hands thoroughly one more time.

Follow these tips to make your mask as effective as possible!
